Igris protects Sung Jinwoo in Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-
The first season of Solo Leveling took a beloved story and made a name for itself thanks to its production quality and faithfulness to the essence of the source material. If episode 2 is any indication of the trajectory of the rest of the anime, season 2 is set to raise the bar for the franchise even more. Solo Leveling’s story has always been great in Chugong’s light novel, but it was OKB’s incredibly consistent art that propelled the manhwa to superstardom. It’s the same art that fans were most skeptical about getting a sufficient anime adaptation, but A-1 Pictures continues to exceed expectations in Season 2 with Episode 2, “I Suppose You Aren’t Aware.” Solo Leveling once again raises the bar to show that as legendary as its source material is, there are things only anime can do.
Solo Leveling Season 2
Continuing the Red Gate arc that began in Episode 1, Episode 2 (or Episode 14 of the entire series overall) is full of intense action from start to finish and captures everything fans want from the series. Episode 1 was an action-packed premiere, but it was only a hint of what was to come. Episode 2, meanwhile, jumps right into the big battle that was only hinted at in Episode 1, and it works on all fronts. All the important passages of the story are still there, from Sung Jinwoo’s struggle with his humanity to the mystery of the System. However, these basic subplots take a secondary role compared to the high-intensity sakuga that characterizes the main reel of Solo Leveling. The first episode of Season 2 was a great relaunch, but Episode 2 brings fans back to what made Solo Leveling one of the most talked about anime series of 2024.

Solo Leveling Season 2, Episode 2 Takes the action to epic new highs
The episode has some amazing fights happening simultaneously
Episode 2 opens immediately with Jinwoo doing what he does best: raising a group of new Shadow Soldiers to add to his army. This represents a big tonal shift from Season 1, which will become even more pronounced as Jinwoo continues to expand his army, taking the weight off his shoulders and imposing his power on ever-greater threats. While Jinwoo had to fend for himself before, now he can apply strength in numbers. There are still limits to this power, such as having to have enough mana to resurrect his soldiers to continue fighting. But despite these limitations, Jinwoo has become stronger than ever since Season 2, and this episode shows the extent of his new powers in action.
Solo Leveling has an interesting story and lore, but it’s the undeniably fun fights and fights that keep fans coming back. This episode focuses on combat, with conflicts taking place inside and outside the Gate that make every second count. Hwang Dongsoo was a character repeatedly hinted at in Season 1, but Season 2 immediately brought him to the fore in a terrifying new way. This is the first real glimpse fans will get of his power, and it’s as impressive as an S rating can be expected to be. Dongsoo creates an interesting secondary conflict against Jinwoo’s current concerns during the season 2 premiere, culminating in episode 2.

The second season of Solo Leveling introduces a brand new Sung Jinwoo after his Job Change as Shadow Monarch and a new obstacle to overcome.
Back inside the Red Gate is where the real action takes place in Episode 2. Amazing visual effects and fight choreography are what this episode is all about. All of this is accompanied by Hiroyuki Sawano’s excellent score, which is as upbeat as it needs to be, yet reserved enough to highlight the conflicting emotions of Jinwoo’s situation. In the middle of it all, Jinwoo pulls off a series of potentially viral TikTok attacks with the expected amount of gore. There are also more than enough instances of glowing eyes and confident jokes to remind fans why they fell in love with Jinwoo in the first place.

While the story is still peripherally told through Jinwoo, it is through the eyes of the other characters in Episode 2 that viewers can see in a new light how Jinwoo has truly evolved. The main vessels for this added perspective are the two highest ranked Hunters who joined the Raid Party: Rank Healer Heejin Park and Rank Tanker Kim Chul. Heejin herself gets an interesting visual element that isn’t in the manhwa, but she’s a great choice for character design that helps her stand out as a higher level hunter. She’s a strong hunter with a solid moral compass and can tell the heroes from the villains from the moment she’s given the choice between Chul or Jinwoo.
By far the funniest human character in Solo Leveling Season 2 Episode 2 other than Jinwo himself is Kim Chul. After the trauma he experienced in the first episode, Chul finds himself on a psychological spiral that plays an integral role in the events that unfold. Despite Chul being presented as a minor antagonist in demeanor, Chul’s personal perspective almost paints Jinwoo as a villain, forcing the audience into a conflicted position as they witness yet another deplorable act added to Jinwoo’s ever-growing list of atrocities.
